Artist's Description
In 1767 the Burmese Army invaded Ayutthaya (The capital of Siam) and destroyed the 14th century temple Wat Mahathat. The statues of Buddha where smashed to fragments and left scattered around the grounds. The area remained abandoned and overgrown until the 1950's when the Dept of Fine Art began restoration work. No one knows for certain how the fragment of this statue came to be placed where the tree overgrew it but the best theory is that a relic hunter tried to remove the artifact and hid it near a tree to pick it up later and never came back.
