Description
This cruising sailboat beats into the wind on a point of sail referred to as "close-hauled'. It is as close to sailing into the wind as possible with this boat and involves pulling the sails tight and close to the center line of the boat. While this is not the fastest point of sail for any boat, it feels like it because you are going into the wind and your boat speed adds to the "apparent wind" or the wind you feel. It also usually involves a fair amount of heel or leaning of the boat and crashing over oncoming waves rather than going with the waves as on a downwind run. This scene was captured from the deck of s/v Lucy as she sailed downwind into Swanson Channel in the Canadian Gulf Islands. Portland Island and Salt Spring Island can be seen in the background.
